How to create a relaxing bathroom

Long days in the office, countless trips to kids’ clubs and activities, endless hours scrolling through our phones, we 21st century humans are probably the busiest lot ever in the history of time. Thankfully the majority of us have been blessed with a great asset in our homes which we tend to under-utilise – The bathroom. This precious room can take us from all that chaos, hustle and bustle right into a temporary state of calmness, renewal and rejuvenation if we care to use it well.

Especially as we approach the colder months, we can enjoy more time at home and escape into a little world of serenity every now and again. What is important in making your bathroom more relaxing is to focus on treating all of your senses to some delight. Read on for some of our tips.

See a beautiful view

Soft whites, greys and earthy tones work very well to create a simple and visually appealing scheme in the bathroom. Harsh overhead lighting doesn’t do much when you’re trying to relax, use dimmable lighting to alter the ambience. White candles are also a favorite for adding a crisp, luxurious feel.

Add an extra touch of cosiness

The last thing you want when you enter your bathroom is to be hit with icy coolness. A towel warmer will keep that bathroom nice and toasty, ready for you even before you step into the bath tub. Good quality bath towels and bath mats are a must have. Finish off with a cosy fluffy robe to enjoy some extra hours of warmth and comfort as you lounge around the house.

Good tunes for your ears

The set is all ready. Don’t let it be spoiled by noisy neighbours or noise-loving family members. Shut windows, doors and anything else that can keep the noise out as you settle in to relax. Get some soothing music on and escape into a world of your own.

Smell the goodness

Nothing beats a nicely scented bathroom, it adds something soothing to the whole bathing experience. Essential oils, bath bombs, rose petals, you name them. Fresh flowers like roses and lavender are a perfect addition for that extra beautiful aroma. No wonder spas use this trick all the time.

Designer’s pick – Luxury furniture

If you love luxury furniture, you’ll love this collection. They’ve been fondly given the name ‘Common Comrades’. Designed for Mooi by Neri&Hu, this collection of luxury stools is inspired by those seen throughout China. Lyndon Neri and Rossana who founded Neri&Hu Design and Research Office are the designers behind them.

“A clever personification of the simplicity of country life, where everybody knows ‘who’ you are and ‘what’ you do”. The Common Comrades table family amuses us with its utilitarian simplicity & honest soul. – excerpt from moooi.com

Bestowed with names like Emperor, Merchant and Farmer, each stool embodies a personality within a community. It’s also fascinating to see how the designers have cleverly integrated kanji lettering, one of the three main writing systems of the Japanese language into the design of the stools.

We love the polished look with the bold red colour clearly adding to this effect. Undoubtedly making a stand-out piece in any environment. They can be used individually as a stool, bedside table or grouped together to create a unified modern style.

Made from solid birch and a red lacquered finish at the base, they represent a perfect balance of form, function and detail. Luxury furniture up our street. We can definitely imagine them teamed up with the backdrop of our Moody Monday wallpaper Secret Music collection.

Texture in Fashion Design

Admittedly, this post’s topic if not what one would normally expect on an interior designer’s blog. However, all this talk about textured interior designs from our previous blogs has whet our appetite, and so in this blog post, we’re looking at the use of texture in fashion design. More specifically, we’ve fallen in love with a few fabric manipulation techniques – or in other words reshaping the surface of the material:

The fabric then takes on an additional dimension and depth, and creates a very exquisite look on the clothing items. To start with, we’ve selected a few haute couture designs that have won us over:

We find the designs to be a fascinating mix of simplicity and sophistication. On a more nature-inspired note, we also liked these two airy dress designs that use colour, texture and pleating techniques:

We think texture fabric is an excellent alternative to patters, in adding personality and elegance to an outfit, be it for the day to day wear, or that very special occasion that calls for a carefully selected dress.

Creating Textured Walls

We’ve already seen that adding tactile or visual texture to wallcoverings can add a striking and luxurious look to your interior. But when it comes to using this technique, a few things are worth mentioning.

One of the most common methods is the use of textured paint, which creates the look and feel of a canvas, which can then be enhanced by using additional materials like sponges, wood, ribbon, lace, sand, leather, birch and many more. Special tools are used to create texture walls, such as putty knives, brushes, towels, sponges, rollers and combs. Perhaps one of the easiest ways to create a simple and impactful texture in your wall paint is to use a dry brush with hard bristle or even a broom:

Although textured walls do require for extra time and patience, they are very charming and luxurious, guaranteed to get your guests talking. And on the up side you don’t need to make all the walls in your interior textured, as these walls tend to be the high point of attraction in an interior, so you can keep the rest in a complementary, plain design, to make the textured wall the highlight of the room:

Autumn Colour Trends

We’re still quite a long way from autumn, but the season of nostalgia has its very special place in our hearts so in this blog post we’ve decided to share our views on autumn colour trends in interior design, with a Moody Monday spin.

Trying to move away slightly from the cliché red-yellow-orange, we think the blue-green-purple palette to a modern interpretation of the fall season. Just think of half-ripe grapes in the vineyard, or the Northern lights, and you get the picture on what colours we envision:

We think the mix of colours is a perfect match for the season: a mystical and wondrous representation of the autumn. In our view, interior designs incorporating these colours look brilliantly modern, exquisite and luxurious. But if you’re thinking dark colours are not as easy to fit into an interior, you’re not alone. However, if used creatively, we believe these tones can create a mysterious, contemporary and cosy atmosphere in any interior – be it a living room, bedroom or a café. Here are some of our favourite examples:

What’s more, darker colours can also be used to add spatiality to small spaces – one more reason to love them! We believe these particular hues of blue-green-purple are a perfect match for the shadowy and mysterious autumn season and we highly recommend using them in modern interiors.

Designing for Outdoor Spaces

When you’re looking to arrange an outdoors living space, sky is the limit, right? But this also means there are so many options, it may become daunting to choose the best ones for your space. In this blog post, we aim to show you a few of our favourite arrangements and decorations, and hopefully offer some inspiration to help you design your outdoor space – just the way you want it.

Furniture: The choices you make in picking the outdoor furniture will have a great impact on the feel of the space. For example, we recommend using a monochromatic colour palette adorned with sumptuous cushions and throws for a more glamorous look:

Alternatively, if you’re going for an urban style, choose contemporary designer & luxury outdoor furniture, which we recommend you enhance with bold accessories for a pop of colour:

Lighting: Whether it’s still daytime or getting dark, we think the use of different levels of lighting adds a special ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the outdoors living space. In line with the overall style of your space, you may decide to go for more contemporary or sumptuous options – below are a few suggestions. As interior designer Shelly Riehl David says, “Nothing flickers like real flame in a gas lantern”. Looking at these pictures, we could not agree more:

How to Decorate a Conservatory

If you live in a moody weathered country, but would still like to enjoy the blossoming season, we’ve prepared some tips for you in this blog post. We’re presenting our top two favourite tips for arranging a cosy, inviting conservatory into a delightful design, perfect for city or suburb residences:

Tip #1: Base colours. The main purpose of a conservatory is to bridge that gap between indoor and outdoor living, and one way of doing this, is by allowing sufficient light into the space, and making the best use of it. To take full advantage of the glass walls and ceiling, use colours that reflect it back. Our favourites include a monochrome arrangement, a plain white design, or a naturalistic colour, such as green:

Tip #2: Complete the look. While keeping the space neat and airy is essential, don’t let it turn too boring. One challenge for conservatories, is the lack of hard walls, which are generally the no. 1 choice for decoration. To compensate, we recommend using soft furniture as a great workaround. Use a few bold design cushions to add personality to the space and at the same time make is look more cosy and inviting. We recommend using colours and patterns that liven up the space, especially if you’re looking to add a contemporary twist to your conservatory space. In the example below, we recommend three of our cushions that come in high contrast colours, to spice up the look of this conservatory:

Unusual Living Spaces

As humans, we tend to be wary of odd things around us, and the same applies to unconventional spaces. While these may sometimes be a bit more challenging to arrange, it can also be an opportunity to create a unique interior, with a very different feel.

One great example to illustrate the creativity behind the design of an unusual living space this is the triangular house in Muko, a one of a kind design created by Fujiwara room Architects in Japan.

From the outside, the building looks like an unusually geometrical shape, being wrapped in glass and tall vertical louver slabs. The advantage of this is that it allows light to both enter and exit the home, depending on the time of day, and the interior continues to receive sun light throughout the day, from different angles. This creates interesting patters of light and shadow in the interior, at the same time being an ingenious way of making the most out of natural light.

Once you step inside the Muko house, the experience changes completely, from the firmness of precise geometric lines and angles, to more fluid shapes that undulate throughout the interior.

The ground floor is arrange as one open plan design, and the use of these, and all the furnishings in this interior are based on curvilinear formations, which give an interesting, flow sensation, making is easy to navigate from the dining are into the bedroom, without the use of any sharp dividers.
